Importing a menu you already have
If your menu already exists as a photo, a PDF or text somewhere, you don't have to type it in. Go to Administration → Import your menu, then upload photos or a PDF, or paste the text. An AI reads it and adds your sections and dishes, usually within a minute. You can send it to your catering or seasonal page instead of your main menu; see Catering and seasonal menus.
Everything comes in hidden, so only you can see it. Go through each dish, fix anything it got wrong, then publish them one at a time or all at once from the import's page. If it read the wrong thing, Undo this import removes every dish it added.
It never sets dietary or allergen labels, even when your menu shows them. Where your menu marks one, the dish gets a note under it saying so. Set the label yourself if it's right. The note goes away when you save or publish the dish.
A new site can import twice before we've reviewed it, and any site up to five times a day.
Sections come first
Your menu is built from sections: Appetizers, Entrées, Drinks, whatever works for you. Add one with Add New Section on your homepage while signed in. You can't add a dish until there's a section to put it in.
Each section can have header and footer text, which is useful for things like "All served with flatbread" or a note about sourcing.
The section shortcut bar
As soon as you have more than one section, diners get a row of buttons above your menu, one per section, that jump straight to it. The bar stays on screen as they scroll, so someone halfway down a long menu can get to Desserts without scrolling back to the top.
Nothing to switch on: it follows your sections and their order. If a diner searches or filters, buttons for sections with no matching dishes disappear too.
Adding dishes
Use the + on a section to add a dish. It needs a name and a price. The description and photo are optional. For a dish priced by the day, check Market price instead of giving a number, and your menu shows “Market price”.
Photos
Photos are cropped to a square on upload. You get a crop tool, so you choose which part is used.
They're optional, and dishes without one just show text. A section where only some dishes have photos looks uneven, so photograph all of a section or none of it.
Descriptions
Descriptions support basic formatting: bold, italic, lists and links. Keep them short: most people read your menu on a phone, standing up, deciding whether to come in.
The row of icons under each dish
When you're signed in, five small icons sit under every dish on your menu. Nobody visiting your site sees them. Left to right, they are:

Drag handle — press here and drag to move the dish. This is the one people miss.

Draft or published — click to switch between them. The icon changes color to show which it is. A draft is only visible to you.

Sold out — click when the kitchen runs out. The dish stays on the menu but is clearly marked, which is usually better than making it vanish. Click again when it's back.

Edit — name, price, photo, description, allergens, specials. Everything about the dish.

Delete — gone for good, after a confirmation. If the dish is only off for a while, use draft or sold out instead.
Sections have their own, shorter row: just edit and delete, the same two icons.
Putting things in order
Dragging works from the handle, not the dish. The two columns of dots ( ) at the left of that row are the grip. Press and hold there, then drag. Grabbing the name or the photo won't move it, which is why reordering can feel broken at first. On a phone, press and hold for a moment before you start moving.
You can drag a dish up and down within its section, and straight into a different section. Position saves as soon as you let go. There's no save button. To reorder the sections themselves rather than the dishes inside them, use Administration → Menu Order.
